The state of hydration of a poikilohydric organism is controlled by the directly surrounding environment. This means that the organism quickly reaches equilibrium with the water potential in their direct surrounding, changing between being either hydrated or dessicated (air-dried) state. The dessicated state is often metabolically inactive.
